Make it stand out

This Valentine’s Day I was plagued by movie-induced anxiety. I wanted to find The One – the right movie for the occasion, that is – and the added pressure of wanting something romantic didn’t help. After suffering through this indecision for forty minutes, I realised there was actually one person who could ease my torment: 80s Nicolas Cage.

In the contemporary cultural consciousness, revered for his theatricality, Cage tends to be defined by his transformative, intense performances in post-millennium films like National Treasure, Ghost Rider, or Longlegs. I, however, am constantly returning to his earlier works. Memes poking fun at his zany acting choices mean that younger generations forget that Cage can not only be silly, but deeply sexy – and it's the coexistence of these qualities that actually make him a perfect romantic leading man.
