Glad Rags: Bishop Briggs Explores Her Personal Style
Get your glad rags on gang! Glad Rags is a column where we chat to some of our favourite musician's about their best garms. This week we're joined by British-American singer and songwriter, Bishop Briggs.
How important is clothing to you for a stage presence?
I love to be creative in every aspect of my life so it really feels like picking clothes for stage gets to be an extension of that! I take a lot of pride in putting together a special outfit that represents a moment in time.

Do you have a different style on stage compared to off stage?
It depends on the day and how much sleep I’ve had! No matter what I am always in pursuit of living out my teenage emo girl dreams.
Do you think image is important for musicians wanting to be successful?
I think it allows you to tell a story of who you are and where you come from. It breaks my heart seeing artists trying to conform to something that isn’t true to them.
Who are some of your style inspirations as an artist?
I love 90s vintage Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood! Those runway show looks are all over my Pinterest board. I also grew up in Japan and a lot of the cheerfulness mixed with darkness that I saw growing up I try to implement in little ways in what I wear.
What is your favourite piece of clothing to wear on stage and why?
There are these R13 platform sneakers that I have and whenever I wear them I feel powerful! Plus, jumping so high in shoes that already have a platform is exhilarating!
What is your favourite piece of clothing to wear offstage and why?
I love a thrifted vintage oversized band tee. They are always so soft and I also love the old school design of those shirts. Side note- I also have a Cher tee shirt that was from one of her tours that I live in!
Do you think people look down on musicians who like fashion too and if so, why?
Oh gosh! I hope not. I think being an artist is about artistic expression so I feel there is a beauty in that landing in fashion as well.
How has your style evolved alongside your journey as an artist?
I feel more emphasis on comfort than coverage! I don’t have any full length mirrors in my house and I really like it that way. It allows me to take in the fabric and how my body feels rather than looking “perfect” whatever that really is in the first place.
What advice would you give someone struggling to find their image as an artist?
Go back to your roots! Think of who you admired growing up and what they were wearing. It can be as small as the way they accessorize but is there the way they did it that you can bring into your look today? Also, Pinterest curates images based on what you are clicking so you can find yourself in a rabbit hole of inspiration!
