In Fiona Apple’s magnum opus, “Paper Bag,” there’s a lyric that goes “He said ‘It’s all in your head’ / And I said ‘So’s everything’ but he didn’t get it.” 25 years later, a soundbite of that verse has been used in over 17,000 TikToks, all featuring young girls lamenting that the men in their lives who, regardless of circumstance, can’t seem to put themselves in a woman’s shoes.
Whereas many women can empathise with pretty much anything, sometimes too much (you don’t wanna know how many times I’ve cried over anyone sitting alone at a restaurant), some men seem to have limitations of what they can – or are willing to – empathise with. They were probably outraged over the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis NBA trade, but can’t really get why their girlfriend loves listening to Elliott Smith even if she can’t do so without crying.
