Playing Dress To Impress on Roblox has taken over the internet and my life. I watch my friends get married, have babies, and sign book deals. Meanwhile, I’m trying to find the perfect shade of blue for a non-existent tank top to match the one Lara Croft wears even though I’m not sure that younger generations would get the reference. In person, my eyes glaze over as I listen to my peers talk about mortgages or their latest feud at work and theirs glaze over when I try to explain the mechanics of this game. When I’m not playing Dress To Impress, I watch other people play it, but even for someone losing all their spare time to this game, it’s rare that I ever make the winners podium.

Not to be confused with the dating TV show where you have to pick a romantic partner based on the outfit they choose, this Roblox minigame has professional streamers, 12-year-olds, and Madison Beer stunting on each other by seeing who can pull the best look in five minutes. The goal is to serve the C-word, seeking satisfaction through strangers on the internet congratulating your slay.

Starting as a ‘new model’, you slowly ascend the ten ranks to ‘top model’ as you collect ratings from other users. Racing to change your statuesque avatar’s appearance from a blue and faceless creature into the perfect supermodel wearing whatever best suits the theme is no small feat when the roster of items regularly switches up, with VIP members having more clothing to choose from. That said, I’ve just found the cheat to getting into their section for free as I’m not opposed to bending the rules - even in a game literally made for kids.

If you’ve seen the memes and are intrigued to play this game yourself, here are some tips on how to win DTI for yourself. It’s truly a miracle that I’ve managed to break away from the catwalk long enough to write this up.

THE BASICS

Like in real life, there are many things to consider when getting ready. Unlike in real life, you must manually select your skin colour and facial features. Don’t forget these or you’ll end up on the catwalk looking like a blue Slenderman.

Here’s a checklist for everything to include:

Hair: Unless you’re attempting a Humpty Dumpty extravaganza, make sure there’s time to choose a hairstyle from the salon area. You can stack multiple hairstyles for the drama, just make sure the colours blend properly.

Face/Makeup: Don’t leave it too late to pick your face, it’s so stressful to be left faceless like a marshmallow. You could have picked out the sickest clothing combo ever and still be rated the bare minimum. Choose from both masculine and feminine beats in the mirrors at the salon.

Nails: Another salon feature, there’s only one seat to get your claws manicured so get in there ASAP.

Skin: It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to change your skin from the default navy but you can do so in the upright tanning pods. Learn from my mistakes.

Outfit: Goes without saying. You can experiment with layering different pieces but beware that, which is good for any zombie or apocalypse themes but maybe not so good for a clean girl look.

Shoes: You will be surprised how many people forget the shoes entirely, do not forget the shoes! Unless the theme is shoeless, hippie chic, or broke.

Accessories: Use your discernment and spruce things up a bit with some accessories and props, I can’t give you specific tips here because they keep getting changed around.

Body: Dress To Impress will automatically assume you’re a girl but if you’ve had an idea for a men’s look that would pop off for the theme, you can swap body type at the very end of one of the closet rooms. Beware though, their clothing selection is tiny and the shoes are rancid.

Bonus items: You have the opportunity to unlock various items in the game using the cash that’s scattered across the dressing room floor in each game but here are some DTI codes for August that IGN released for extra rewards.

There’s also a bunch of fabric patterns to choose from in the colour selection panel but perhaps start by making sure the flat colours make sense together first. Don’t get ahead of yourself!

ASSESS THE COMPETITION

Are you playing against actual children or millennial streamers?

The adage “go big or go home” doesn’t necessarily ring true for the former, who will vote in a baby pink number for literally any theme. If you have assessed the situation and have figured out you’re playing against children, try and be nice because they will hold a grudge and call you ugly for rounds on end.

You’ll be able to tell the Gen Z and millennials by their outfits and mannerisms. If you see multiple people dressing in matching chaotic looks, spamming the chat and trolling that usually means the elders and professionals have logged on. You’ll often find them lurking together, jumping around and getting stuck in the rafters. They’ll likely respect you more if you’re snarky and rude for some reason.

Either way, if it seems everyone in the lobby knows each other or if it’s full of VIPs just log off. It will end up just being a popularity contest and you don’t want to be the party guest that nobody invited. This leads me to:

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO PLAY

Was writing this piece a ploy to get more Roblox friends purely to win? A likely thing for me to be doing. Please add me, my username is ‘rexykins’ x

VOTE TACTICALLY

As a beginner, it’s easy to get roped into judging everything fairly. This is how you lose. The more stars you give out to others, the more competition you give yourself. I’m not saying vote everything one star but it’s something to bear in mind.

FIND A REFERENCE

The best way to win people over is to show them something they recognise, I was competing against four different Lana Del Rey impersonators for a recent Summer Sadness round which would have been great if not everybody thought of it.

This tactic works even better if you’re referencing something slightly on the theme that’s a little more outside of the box, eg. a rendition of Ice Spice cleared up a Spice Girls theme earlier. With this, ensure you keep your audience in mind because the kids aren’t going to understand who Karl Lagerfeld is as ‘Fashion Designer’.

One of the funniest ones I’ve seen online includes this Shane Dawson holding a cat for ‘Apology Video’.

POSE 28

When everything else has failed, it’s time to pull out Pose 28. If you can’t beat your opponents, the best you can do is to make them laugh. This dramatic legs-wide pose is iconic enough to have become a meme in itself for a reason. It’s like something out of an America’s Next Top Model challenge.

REMEMBER IT’S JUST A GAME

If you’re flopping too hard, close the app. Go outside and serve theme ‘IRL’ on the grass.
