Glad Rags: Nancy Andersen of Babeheaven

Get your glad rags on gang! Glad Rags is a column where we chat to some of our favourite musician's about their best garms. This week we're joined by Nancy Andersen of Babeheaven!

How important is clothing to you for a stage presence?

I love wearing outlandish dress on stage. I sometimes feel a little bit out of place up there and in a way wearing a huge outfit helps me take up more space physically and mentally. It helps me to push myself further.

Do you have a different style on stage compared to off stage?

I do. I think it's impossible for me to be wearing Simone Rocha or Molly Goddard day to day (as much as I would love to) it would be a little inconvenient. Day-to-day maybe I am slightly more tomboyish but also I always want to wear bright colours and patterns. I’m lucky that I can pull them off so I push the boundary! I nearly always have a giant scrunchy in my hair or on my wrist. Thanks Hannah for making the best scrunchies ever.

Do you think image is important for musicians wanting to be successful?

In a way it's important but I also think that people should just wear whatever they feel comfortable in. There is always a way to create your own style with whatever you have access to, it doesn’t need to be expensive, it just has to be you.

Who are some of your style inspirations as an artist?

I love Bjork as a musician and a style icon. She pushes the boundaries in everything she touches and is so iconic. The swan dress (need I say more). In a totally different place Tyler, the Creator is such an epic style icon, he designs clothes and is immaculately dressed all the time. I wish I had his wardrobe for day to day.

What is your favourite piece of clothing to wear on stage and why?

I don't have a favourite thing yet, I like to switch it up!

What is your favourite piece of clothing to wear offstage and why?

At the moment I love wearing this brown dress, over a white t-shirt and blue trackies with my red camper boots. I love it because I can walk for miles in the shoes its comfy and I feel pretty cool (lol).

Do you think people look down on musicians who like fashion too and if so, why?

In a way I think they do- it's kind of like in Zoolander where they say model/actor/…. the slash makes everyone feel a bit confused and like wait what is she. I don't care though I love clothes... sue me.

How has your style evolved alongside your journey as an artist?

I think it has, but I think style evolves with time anyway- when I was younger I didn’t have access to the clothes I wanted to wear. Now I’m in such an incredible position. I can borrow things from designers and afford incredible clothes I could never have imagined.

What advice would you give someone struggling to find their image as an artist?

Wear whatever makes you feel good, take up all the space. If someone laughs at you they just don't get it yet and they will one day.
