Glad Rags: Dirty Versachi

Make it stand out

Get your glad rags on gang! Glad Rags is a column where we chat to some of our favourite musician's about their best garms. This week we're joined by Dirty Versachi, the intergalatical drag queen.

How important is clothing to you for a stage presence?

EXTREMELY! It’s the final piece of the puzzle after hair and makeup and it assists me in curating the Dirty Versachi alien super-star fantasy.

Do you have a different style on stage compared to off stage?

On stage I’m beaming out my full alien drag fantasy!! I’m creating a world, a fantasy and I’m vibing a futuristic visions of my drag atm. Off stage, I’m super inspired by 80s vibes! And I love op shopping to find unique pieces. But I sometimes like to merge the two, like to include items of clothing that are more street wear to my live show. Or, to include something a little more vivacious from my drag wardrobe into my everyday looks.

Do you think image is important for musicians wanting to be successful?

Extremely! But only if it’s your thing and you care about it! Authenticity is key. If you’re not inspired by fashion then why do something that doesn’t inspire you.  My personal opinion is that image is verrrrrry important especially in the land of social media!

Who are some of your style inspirations as an artist?

This changes constantly!! But three designers that I’m really inspired by right now are: WINDOWSEN, AVAVAV and Aon Atelier (AKA Neon.Nymph).

Growing up I was super inspired by Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Prince and Madonna.

What is your favourite piece of clothing to wear on stage and why?

Ooo this is a hard one because I’d never duplicate an outfit I’ve worn on stage. Something I’m excited to wear on stage is my alien/zombie hand bra which I just made for an upcoming performance.

What is your favourite piece of clothing to wear offstage and why?

Omg! I have this vintage 80s sports jacket that is black and has accents of red, teal and yellow on the sleeves and chest. I definitely over wear this and is my go to jacket when leaving the house!

Do you think people look down on musicians who like fashion too and if so, why?

Probably? But I don’t care! Because if they think that, they’re probably boring. #sorrynotsorry

How has your style evolved alongside your journey as an artist?

I constantly like to push myself out of my comfort zone and to try new things. I only started doing drag last year, the main driver behind wanting to try it was that I was bored. So I feel like my style is constantly evolving and it’s a really fun energy to embody!

What advice would you give someone struggling to find their image as an artist?

I love referencing and being inspired by other artists, but one of my biggest lessons in life has been learning to be comfortable in my own skin. It’s so easy to be influenced in the wrong way, and want to change yourself, or dim your light to be “cool” or wherever. I think it’s super important for an artist to express and find their own point of view. It’s got to come from within! When you beam out and express your authentic self, there’s power there!
