Aphrodite is Savana Ogburn’s Ode to Camp Aquatics

Kristen and I are good friends and collaborators but we live in different states, so we frequently find ourselves planning weekend shoots when we visit each other. We think of these shoots as the Project Runway of photography- we have 72 hours and limited resources to make something magical! 

This particular shoot was born from Kristen and I’s mutual love for all things campy and aquatic. Think: the mermaids from the original animated Peter Pan, Lady Gaga’s Venus and You and I looks, Tim Walker and Kristen Mcmenamy’s iconic mermaid images, among others. We crafted the headpiece from an old plastic hat, silk flowers, and hot glue, and sourced starfish and seashells for the rest of the costume. We shot stills and video on a green screen so that Kristen, who is an amazing animator, could stitch together surreal beach scenes for Aphrodite to live in.
