Mental illness, for me, is characterised by a type of suffering that is impossible to put into words. Depression is romanticised and overused as a character trait on TV and in the media, yet those who suffer from mental illness are afraid or often do not feel safe expressing how they really feel to those around them. The fact that one gets the impulse to dig thorns into their skin, or just need people to know that the everyday is a struggle for them… That is a part of mental illness that is vastly and painfully misunderstood.
