The ‘Burka Banter 2017’ Calendar is a project by artist and illustrator Brown Girl.
I have one simple intention with this project and that is to show that the women behind the burkas are real people. Many people are quick to de-humanise these women and often forget that these women should not be defined exclusively by their clothing. I have created 12 illustrations depicting the women in a number of ‘normal’ situations, ranging from sledging in December to drinking coffee in a hipster café.
I believe in this current political climate, work like this is needed to encourage awareness and educate those from different backgrounds whilst at the same time empower those from Muslim backgrounds.
